I'd made Bruce brush his teeth before his daughter and her mother arrived, as had I. I didn't know if they could tell he'd been drinking, but I knew him well enough by now that I would have been able to tell even if I hadn't seen him doing it. It's not that he was drunk or too slurred, but he had that slightly glassier look he always had when he had even one drink, and he was more hyper and animated somehow, leading the conversation and flitting from topic to topic.

I didn't know if they knew the signs like I did, but if they did, they didn't act like it was anything out of the normal. Elizabeth hugged her dad as soon as she walked into our apartment before her eyes moved around him to check me out. Bruce introduced me to them as his girlfriend instead of his fiancé. I didn't know if it was an oversight on his part or if he just didn't want to hit them with too much all at once.

I greeted Elizabeth in a manner that I hoped was kindly and not too nervous, and she did likewise, complimenting me on my dress and hair. She was wearing jeans and a tank top, and her straight blonde hair stopped at her shoulders.

Tammy stood behind her, her plump body framed down to her breasts by her long, stringy black hair. Tammy wasn't wearing any makeup, though Elizabeth of course was, being a teenager like me.

I was surprised at how kindly Tammy greeted me. I didn't know what I'd expected from Bruce's ex-wife, but it wasn't the nice, slow-speaking woman before me. Didn't ex-wives usually hate the new wife, especially if they were much younger than them? Tammy didn't seem to wish any ill on me and was simply nice.

Of course, looking at Tammy, I couldn't picture Bruce with her. I could see where maybe she'd been a beauty back in her day, but time and motherhood seemed to have taken a toll on her. She was a bit overweight and had wrinkles around her eyes. Her stomach stuck out a bit farther than her breasts, and she looked frumpy in her wrinkled clothes.

While Bruce had a few wrinkles as well, his body was fit. I guess I could see why he'd wanted a younger woman.

Tammy asked Bruce how he'd been, to which he merely responded that he'd been great. Then, he rather rudely asked her how her sorry excuse for a man was, to which she simply replied that he was fine but that he'd been tired after work and had decided to stay home that night instead of accompanying her to bring Elizabeth by to see him and meet me.

I gave Bruce a look, appalled at his behavior, but Elizabeth acted like it was normal. Maybe it was. She simply looked at me and said, "Dad is a jerk."

I was shocked that she'd talk about her dad like that with him standing right
